Bio

Before joining Sterling Partners in 2008, Avi served as General Counsel and Vice President of Business Affairs for Kaplan Professional, a division of Kaplan, Inc., a global provider of lifelong education. As head of business affairs, he was responsible for all business and legal aspects of acquisitions for the business unit, along with forming and managing strategic relationships such as joint ventures and partnerships. As General Counsel of Kaplan Professional, Avi led a team responsible for all legal affairs of the division. At Kaplan, Avi was instrumental in identifying efficiencies in areas such as vendor management, discount rationalization and contract management. His work in this area substantially reduced the contract cycle and enabled the division to give greater emphasis to its core areas of expertise. He applies this experience daily in his work at Sterling. Before joining Kaplan, Avi spent six years as a corporate attorney with Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, where he was responsible for transactions such as acquisitions and dispositions, mergers, public offerings, recapitalizations and restructurings, often for private equity fund clients. He also represented several private equity-backed companies, serving in as outside general counsel and managing all legal matters confronted by these companies. Avi observed how private equity fund resources and best practices could be applied to operational challenges to drive efficiency and value to the company’s customers, employees and fund investors—also crucial experience for his work at Sterling.
