Kel, 51, held the position of CEO of RBC Centura Bank from 2001 until his retirement in 2004 after serving as President of NYSE Centura Banks, Inc, before its sale to RBC Financial Group in 2001. Kel began his career in 1979 as a branch manager with Wachovia Bank in Greenville, NC. In 1982, he joined First Union National Bank where he served until 1988 as a commercial lender and area manager generating senior loans for companies with revenues under $50 million. In 1988, Kel joined Centura Bank as a regional executive for the Rocky Mount, NC area. Following this post, Kel held several other positions with Centura prior to being appointed CEO, including Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, President and Vice Chairman of the bank, Chief Credit Officer, and Chief Risk Officer. After 25 years of experience in the banking industry, Kel is a founding partner and Principal of Plexus Capital. Kel is active in North Carolina and his community having served as Senior Advisor to the Governor of NC for Business and Economic Affairs, past Chairman of the North Carolina Bankers Association and the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce, past director of the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry, President of the Rocky Mount Family YMCA and Chairman of the Capital Campaign for a new YMCA building in Rocky Mount, NC, board member of the Carolinas Gateway Partnership (a public/private economic development partnership in eastern NC), and member of the Board of Visitors at North Carolina Wesleyan College where he chaired their annual fundraiser twice. He also served as founder and Chairman of the Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina, was a Trustee of Elizabeth City State University and served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Kel currently is a member of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Board of Visitors where he has also served as an adjunct professor, a Trustee of the Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise, a director of the Golden Leaf Foundation in NC (a $700MM foundation for economic development of distressed communities in NC), a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation Board, and an Executive Committee Member of Live Oak Bank in Wilmington, NC. Kel is an Eagle Scout and holds a BS degree in Business and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
