Bio

Spencer joined SignalFire in 2018 as the Director of Finance to lead and scale finance operations. He has spent the majority of his career helping build out and systematize finance functions at other top tier venture firms. He started his career at the San Jose office of PricewaterhouseCoopers in the assurance practice, specializing in venture capital and life science companies. He cut his teeth on venture capital valuations during the heyday of heavily increased regulatory oversight and investor scrutiny into valuation practices for privately held illiquid assets. He moved to a position at Morgenthaler Ventures to modernize and systematize their back office functions. After assisting in launching new funds and a sister firm, Spencer had the opportunity to build out the back office at another rapidly scaling venture firm. For four years at Social Capital, Spencer helped manage the blocking and tackling for a couple of successful fund raises, back office structuring, and the launch of a public investing vehicle. As the Finance Manager of the Hedge Fund, he ensured the smooth day-to-day functioning of all investing and reporting functions, working closely with portfolio managers and investors. He is a graduate of University of California at Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Business Management Economics, and is currently pursuing his M.S. in Behavioral Economics at the London School of Economics. Having previously worked and served on the board of directors of Downtown Streets Team, a non-profit working to end homelessness through the dignity of work, he’s now serving on DST’s San Francisco Advisory Council to help them tackle an issue so endemic in San Francisco.
